What Tooling Engineers Can Expect from Hoosier Pattern

A tooling package has to fit the equipment, process requirements, and production schedule behind it. At Hoosier Pattern, we start with the foundry’s requirements and a conversation with the technical team responsible for the job.

We bring experience in DISA tooling, cope and drag patterns, and complex core boxes, along with 3D sand printing when the application calls for it. Across that work, our focus is the same: deliver tooling and printed sand that arrive ready to run, with clear communication from the first review through shipment.

Our team works with tooling engineers and pattern makers to understand the requirements of the build. We review the supplied models and specifications, clarify details, and discuss concerns that could affect tooling fit or assembly before work moves forward.

That conversation draws on years of building tooling for foundries. We know schedules move, and designs evolve, sometimes overnight. We see that as part of the job. When a change comes in, we review its effect on the scope and timing with your team before proceeding. When we see a potential issue, we raise it and offer suggestions for your team to consider. Any agreed changes begin with a shared understanding of the job and your requirements.

Precision machining and craftsmanship are part of the build. Verification is part of getting it ready to ship. Our quality process includes pre-shipment checks and dimensional scanning against the CAD model where applicable, giving our team a way to verify the finished work against the specified geometry.

The goal is tooling that arrives prepared for use, with fewer avoidable adjustments or returns. For a tooling engineer managing a program launch or production deadline, that preparation helps reduce the uncertainty around putting new tooling into service.

A tooling delivery date is part of the foundry’s production plan. We make the schedule visible through a shared calendar so customers can see when their tooling is planned for delivery.

Direct access to our technical team supports that visibility. Questions about the build, a requirement, or a deadline can be discussed with the people doing the work. We work through those details with you so the project can move forward with clear expectations.

Having both conventional tooling and 3D sand printing capability gives your team additional options when the work calls for them. A prototype casting, a complicated core assembly, lower casting volumes, or a core-room capacity constraint may be a reason to consider printed sand.

We can discuss those options with you in the context of the geometry, volume, timing, and production requirements. Our role is to contribute tooling and printing experience to that discussion, with the foundry determining what fits its operation.

For printed cores and molds, preparation continues after printing. Our process includes dimensional and strength testing to verify that the printed work meets customer specifications, with consistent quality from one order to the next. Cleaning and a separate audit for loose sand are part of that preparation. We take responsibility for those steps before shipment because the foundry should not have to finish our cleaning work before using what we deliver.

We use crates and protective foam to help the finished work arrive intact. That protective packaging is included in the quoted cost, with no hidden packaging fees.

Those steps support the same ready-to-run objective as our conventional tooling: work that arrives prepared for the next stage of your process. They are practical examples of what Excellence as a Standard means at Hoosier Pattern.

Whether you need a DISA tooling package, cope and drag patterns, a complex core box, or printed cores and molds, we welcome a conversation about the work. Share your models, specifications, and required timing so our team can review the project with you.

Not every project is the right fit for our shop, and we will be upfront with you about that. Our commitment is to your success. If Hoosier Pattern is not the right shop for the job, we will help point you in the right direction.
